This an Eastwood Airline 59 1P, in classic glossy black with white pickguard and white rubber binding. This guitar is bursting with retro style, but it is certainly not just a visual spectacle; with some vintage style distortion and a good reverb, this axe produces a really charming, jangly tone that is perfect for indie styles. The neck is a slim C profile that is very comfortable, and our talented in-house tech has set the action just right. The single pick-up in the bridge means that this guitar is not exactly versatile, but what it does it does beautifully. Other features include Wilkinson Deluxe tuners, a Tone Pros bridge, a Vintage Voiced Airline singlecoil pickup (that’s right, it is NOT a humbucker). This guitar is in excellent condition, with only some very light scratches on the finish, mostly on the back. The frets have about 90% life left, and the neck is nice and straight. Ships in its original hardshell case.
A Brief History from our Tech Writer
Airline was a proprietary brand owned by the retailer Montgomery Ward, through which they released a now iconic line of guitars. Montgomery Ward was among the large department stores in the 1960s who sought to capitalize on the ‘60s guitar boom by producing their own line of affordable guitars. And while Silvertone may have been more prolific, Airline guitars are unmistakable for their awesome retro style, and they have even found their way into the hands of some big players, like Jack White, and Robert Smith of The Cure. Airline guitars were manufactured between 1958 and 1968, but Eastwood Guitars bought the brand in the early 2000s, and has been making tributes to the originals ever since.
