1958 Gibson J-45 w/ OHSC
This is as 1958 Gibson J-45 dreadnought acoustic. The piece is in fine condition, with plenty of beautiful checking across the finish. There are a few bumps and dings on the top, back, and sides. The only real issue of note is some bellying and dipping on the soundboard, but it is fairly minor and does not affect the sound a great deal. The low frets also have some decent wear on them, with some divots forming on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd frets. Apart from that, it is all beautifully aged acoustic goodness! The action is set perfectly, and the sound is full and rich, with plenty of clarity in the high and low registers. The tuners are smooth and clean, but the knobs seem to be replacements, as do the bridge pins. The instrument was dated using the Factory Order Number, found on the inside of the body cavity. It also ships in its original hardshell case.
A Brief History from our Tech Writer
The Gibson J-45 was born as the replacement for the J-35, part of Gibson’s flattop answer to Martin’s very successful “D” series. The J-45 was nicknamed “The Workhorse Guitar” for its stripped-down and understated nature, this owed in part to the shortages of World War II. In fact, the trade-mark Sunburst finish was applied to hide imperfections in the tops. This proved to be a popular look, and ironically enough commands a higher price than the technically higher quality J-50s. The instrument is a legendary staple of the acoustic world, having been played by countless legends since its inception in 1942, and it’s still in production today!
