1960s Kay Speed Demon K571, Red
Here we have a beautiful piece from the once gargantuan Kay Musical Instruments Company, a K571 Speed Demon. Kay produced economy instruments at high volume during the guitar boom, and this lead to the use of plywood laminate bodies for many of these guitars. Though never as well desired as a solid wood instrument, some of this guitars manage to shine in spite of the cheaper materials. This is one such instrument; a unique and enjoyable player with a charming nasally acoustic voice and a crystal clear amplified sound, with some interesting break-up as well. The instrument has great playability to boot, with a thick neck that you can really grab a hold of. The brass frets are in great shape and give the guitar a distinct look to go with its groovy ‘60s aesthetic. There are plenty of bumps and dings, but the red finish still looks great. There is also some blemishes on the 13th fret that appear to stem from imperfections in the fretboard. All in all this is a wonderful throwback piece and a unique player for anyone looking for something a little different. Ships in a chipboard case.
