A Brief History from our Tech Writer

In the early 1900s, Jazz bands were being lead by an instrument that would doubtless surprise many today: the banjo. Banjoists like Harry Reser provide lighting quick and precise leads on rags that were wildly popular for the day. The four string tenor banjo was the instrument of choice, a shorter instrument than the more typical bluegrass banjo of today. One of the kings of banjo building was William L. Lange, who had his hands in a few major brands of the day including Orpheum, Lange Style, and most prolifically, Paramount. Boasting “piano volume and harp quality tone”, Paramount banjos were well loved and well used, with a penchant for elegant ornamentation matched only by there stellar sound. Today they are equally sought after as gorgeous wall hangers and as player’s pieces for those looking for that roaring ‘20s jazz sound.

Details

This is an Artists Professional Super Paramount tenor banjo. This piece is gorgeous, with all the lovely ornamentation you’d expect from a Paramount. Each fretboard inlay is different, and the headstock inlays are in great shape and accent well with the gold hardware. This rare model is in fabulous condition and is very clean. The only unfortunate exception is that the G and E tuners have been replaced, but aside from that she’s all original. The sound is great and it plays nicely; a great example of this beautiful model. Ships in a hard-shell case whose top shell has detached.
