1960s Univox Violin Bass

This is a Univox Violin Bass, in the style of the Hofner basses famously played by Paul McCartney. The guitar boom exploded onto the world in the early ‘60s, and Japanese manufacturers sprinted to produce as many iconic lookalikes as possible to cash in on the market. No marketing boon was more tantalizing than the Fab Four, and the violin bass’s iconic image made it a perfect candidate for Japanese mass manufacture. Univox instruments were imported by Merson Musical Supply, mostly from Matsumoku. This piece is a faithful representation of the original, with a hollow body and a rectangular control panel on the lower bout with volume, tone, and pick-up switches. There is also a tone circuit switch for added colors. The bass is also in fine condition, with a straight neck and healthy frets, and the requisite checking on the body finish. The back has some scuffs, but these do little to distract from the handsome birdseye veneer. All told, this bass is a great example of guitar boom Japan and would be a great addition to any collection. Ships in a gig bag.
