1976 Erlewine "Double Fantasy" Gibson Les Paul
A Brief History from our Tech Writer
If you make brief trip up Interstate 35 from our shop in lovely New Braunfels, Texas and you’ll find yourself in Austin, home of famous luthier Mark Erlewine. Mr. Erlewine has been building guitars since the 1969 for legends like Billy Gibbons and Mark Knopfler, but he’s also lent his talents to players looking for custom “Fantasy” guitars, like this one. Today, Erlewine Guitars still produces their proprietary lines, builds custom guitars, and does expert repairs for the likes of Willie Nelson and “Trigger”.
This is a Double Cutaway Les Paul style body affixed to an existing Gibson neck, built by Mark Erlewine in 1976. The neck itself is missing its serial number, but we can place it in the early ‘60s based on a couple points: 1) The 17 degree headstock angle puts it either between 1904-66 or 1983-present, and since the guitar was assemble in 1976, it can’t be the latter. 2) The neck profile is quite thin and is consistent with 1960 or so, not fat like a ‘50s profile. No matter when the neck was made, one thing that is for sure is that it plays smooth as silk. The pick-ups are DiMarzios and they sound awesome, a great substitute for PAFs. The pots are CTS and their codes date to 1976. The hand crafted body is made from a solid piece of mahogany with a maple top finished like a late ‘50s burst. Further hardware details include a brass nut and Schaller tuners. The body has a good deal of checking, but the biggest cosmetic blemishes are on and around the neck joint, were there is lots of finish cracking. There is also a crack in the neck at the joint that appears to have been repaired long ago and is very sturdy. After a cleaning, set-up, and inspection from our luthier, this guitar plays and sounds great and looks awesome doing it. The instrument ships in a Gibson hard-shell case, but it is very beat-up and parts of it are being held together with tape.
