Here we have a 1989 Fender Stratocaster Plus. The Plus series was an attempt by Fender to update the American Standard Strat with modern trappings like locking tuners, Lace Sensor pick-ups, and rolling nuts. This piece is equipped with three Lace Sensor Gold pick-ups, once used by Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Buddy Guy. The sound is fantastic, with plenty of Strat twang and attack but with added warmth and depth; truly a “plus”. The finish on this axe has been redone to a sort of metallic olive burst and the original Blue Pearl Burst finish is visible through some peeling on the lower part of the body and sides. There is some corrosion on the locking tuners and on the bridge, some intense scratches on the pick-guard and pick-up covers, and some seriously stubborn dirt on the edge of the pick-guard that would have been detrimental to the finish to try and remove. There is also holes drilled in the pick-guard near the bridge and a darkening of the neck and fret-board that almost appears like burn marks. Despite all of these character marks, this axe screams and plays like a dream. The sound and playability more than make up for its aesthetic issues, making this a player’s Strat to be sure. Ships in its original molded plastic case.
