This rare find is a 2006 Gibson Flying V Jimi Hendrix Edition, the 137th of a mere 300 made. This stunning guitar is a reproduction of the one-of-kind Flying V hand-painted by Hendrix himself. Being mainly associated with the Fender Stratocaster, Hendrix played precious few Gibson instruments. Hendrix famously played a V at the legendary Isle of Wight festival, but this one was inspired by an earlier instrument. This faithful reproduction captures the psychedelic spirit of Hendrix's original V and would certainly be the centerpiece of any Hendrix fanatic's collection. This Flying V is in near-mint condition and comes complete with the original hard-shell case, papers, a strap, cloth, 1/4" cable and the original OEM documentation. Note; (head stock signed by Jimi's sister Janie Hendrix)
Namm 2006 Gibson Custom Shop press release
Unveiled for the first time to the general public at CES 2006 will be the mythical Jimi Hendrix Psychedelic Flying V. Purchased in 1967 and used on tour in Europe during 1967 and 1968, the guitar—with its swirling, psychedelic designs—highlights the spirit of the times and showcases Jimi’s unique artistic expression.
Meticulously recreating Jimi’s guitar has been a labor of love for the Gibson Custom Shop. Originally painted by Hendrix with what appears to be nail polish, the Custom Shop has used materials which reproduce the same sense of depth and texture. The materials and hardware are faithful reproductions of the original.
