c.1961 Kay Swingmaster K673, Sunburst
During the guitar boom of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, two titans battled it out to produce and sell as many guitars as possible: Harmony and Kay. Kay was most well known for its mid-range instruments but it came very close to being a high-end player when it produced a signature model for Barney Kessel. Though Mr. Kessel did not remain long with Kay, it seems they learned some lessons from building those models, and it shows in their early ‘60s Swingmasters. This guitar is one of that number, a K673 with a trio of Gold K “Kleenex box” pickups. The pickups are by and large the main attraction for this guitar, with a nice full sound that is balanced and reserved; perfect for jazz. The guitar has a beefy, shallow “C” shaped neck and some nice big frets for ease of play. With some expected checking and nicks from age, this guitar is in great condition and has a cool retro look from the pickups and the checkered binding. The instrument is also all original but unfortunately lacks its original case.
