Just a short trip north of our humble New Braunfels, Texas shop lies Austin’s Erlewine Guitars, headed up master luthier Mark Erlewine. Mark has been repairing and building guitars in Austin since 1969 for all manner of players from Billy Gibbons to Mark Knopfler, and has even worked on Willie Nelson’s famous “Trigger” guitar, just to name a few. Not limiting his prowess to music royalty alone, Mr. Erlewine built this beautiful piece for a lover of late ‘50s Gibson Les Pauls. This guitar, complete with a signed certificate by Mark, is a faithful reproduction of a 1959 Les Paul, featuring a genuine Gibson neck. This guitar was crafted in 1978 using Gibson T-buckers, but the CTS pots date to 1984, meaning they were likely replaced at some point. The guitar certainly feels like a ‘50s Les Paul, and the sound, though not from PAFs, is still wonderful and large. This guitar has a very comfortable neck and has a very nice clean feel to it. There is some light checking on the body, but aside from that the instrument is in excellent condition and ships in a hard-shell case with the aforementioned certificate from Erlewine Guitars.
