Gibson began producing its very successful line of acoustic guitars, the J-45, in 1942. At the time, during World War II, its was very difficult to come by flawless pieces of wood and as such it was necessary for Gibson to put a finish on this instruments to hide blemishes. Upon the war’s end, Gibson was able to continue production on the already designed J-50, essentially the J-45 but with a natural finish, possible then because of easy access to fine wood specimens. While not as iconic as the Sunburst finished J-45s, J-50s such as this one still produce the same warm bass tones and really fill up a room with sound. This particular piece does just that, with a rich aged sound due to its 1965 birth date. The guitar feels good in the hands and is a real joy to play. It does show signs of its age, though, in some significant checking on the finish, but this is merely aesthetic. This piece was also part of a run with adjustable bridge saddle height and 3x3 Kluson tuners. Ships in a TSA hard-shell case.
