PRS S2 Starla, Tobacco Burst
Here we have a PRS S2 Starla in classic Tobacco Burst finish. The S2 series was introduced to provide a mid-range line to PRS’s catalog. They took several core instruments and a few throw-backs and stripped down the aesthetic treatments and sourced a few parts from Korea to take down costs, and the result is a very well put together American instrument for a great price. The Starla is one of the throwbacks, with the original Starla line having come out in 2008, and being discontinued in 2013, before PRS moved the model to the S2 series in 2014. This piece is an unusual departure from PRS’s regular output, with an SG style beveled top, a pair of low-output pickups, and a licensed Bigsby tremolo. The pickups are this pieces biggest draw, with a vintage style twang but without the harshness of a Fender single-coil. These pickups shine with a Fender-style amp with lots of reverb. The neck feel and playability are wonderful, and with only a few chips here and there on the body, this piece is super clean as well. The locking tuners are stable and easy to use, and the tune-o-matic bridge keeps tune well. If you are looking for a retro-vintage style axe with PRS level quality and sound, then you’ve found it!
